In Chicago, pizza isn’t just comfort food, it’s an institution. Look no further than the giant crowd that gathers inside and out of Lou Malnati’s at 439 River North under that big red awning and you’ve got an idea of just how popular this Chicagoland deep dish heaven has become.
Everyone has a favorite pizza place. Residents and tourists alike will battle to win favor. For me, it’s Malnati’s hands-down. With a whopping 31 locations around Chicagoland, its the taste of this town – and you can’t compare it to any other pie. Lou Malnati’s is pizza done right.
Start with a deep, deep dish crust so flaky and buttery it will make your mouth water. Then come the toppings. They stuff it so full of fresh mozzarella, sharp romano and cheddar cheeses, sweet tomatoes and your choice of ingredients like fresh spinach, mushrooms and onions. Meat lovers won’t want to pass up the classic, with its specially-spiced sausage. Hints of basil, garlic and onion in the sauce make it absolutely mouth-watering.
The pizza is so rich, one slice could constitute a full meal. Pair it with a comforting bowl of Minestrone or split a Malnati Salad – chock full of tomatoes, black olives, salami and gorgonzola cheese. Those who dare buck the trend can try a thin crust pizza, or pasta, like Lasagna made with spinach, three cheeses and meat or marinara sauce.
But for me, it’s gotta be the pizza. Every time. So when you’re out doing your holiday shopping, stop in for a pie, or grab some carry out. It’s not too far from Left Bank at K Station.
